State Supreme Court takes up same-sex marriage

State Supreme Court takes up same-sex marriage: "As gay-rights groups call for marital equality and opponents warn of a public backlash, societal decay and religious conflict, the California Supreme Court is prepared for an epic three-hour hearing Tuesday on the constitutionality of the state law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman."
----------------
POLS 101 and 354:
This looks like a huge case that could have major consequences. California has 1/8 of the nation's population. If the court creates a right to same-sex marriage, it could lead to a constitutional amendment drive.

Marriage is believed by many to be a religious, scared institution and due to this strong sentiment feel it shouldn’t even be recognized as a legal/government concern. It should be left for individuals to define. I think that all unions between two people should be considered civil unions for all legal purposes. Any definition of marriage as a ‘sacred’ bond would go against governments secular claims, and i don't see how they can justifiably stand behind such a verdict.
